Apr 11-14: Rock, Scissors, Paper
As a former stage performer with experience on London’s West end, Robert Vicencio has transitioned into producer with his upcoming original musical production, Rock, Scissors, Paper. Two years in the making, the show’s April 8 premiere at Lyceum Theatre is the first stage of Vicencio’s larger goal – to bring an original show into South Korea. Apr 11-16: Shanghai Fashion Week
Xintiandi becomes fashionista central at the bi-annual Shanghai Fashion Week. This year’s theme is Flourishing City and will feature some of the country’s finest designers displaying their newest lines. While technically, not open to the public, tickets to private events will surely be floating around near the venue. Apr 13: Yang Jing Bang: Lion's Heads vs Faggots
Nat Alexander’s roving restaurant takes over The Grumpy Pig for another cross-cultural gourmet pop-up. This edition features Lion’s Head meatball representing China and the traditional UK dish faggot. Sets of two include vegetables and space is limited to 40 seats.

Apr 13: Maximilian Hecker
The German dream-pop artist has been feted by the New York Times and enjoys a massive Mainland fanbase due to his frequent tours across Asia. Apr 13: Nicky Romero
The Dutch DJ and producer has scored viral hits like ‘Toulouse’ and UK chart-toppers like his Avicii collaboration, ‘I Could Be the One’. He returns to Shanghai after a packed show last year at Fusion.

Apr 14: Farewell, Kobe
Arguably no basketball player is more beloved in China than Kobe Bryant and Big Bamboo pays tribute to the Black Mamba by screening his last game, serving up brunch and free shots for anytime the self-proclaimed Vino drains a three.

Apr 14: Unity
For their 60th film screening, Green Drinks shows Shaun Monson’s sequel to his 2005 documentary Earthlings. Unity explores “humanity’s hopeful transformation from living by killing into living by loving,” with 100 celebrity narrators presenting indepth looks at what it means to be human. The doc is broken into chapters moving from the Cosmos to exploring human’s capacity of the body, heart and soul.

Apr 14: Nightwish
The symphonic metal band is one of the biggeset bands Finland has produced, selling more than 8 million records in their 20 year career. Best known globally for their hit song ‘Wish I Had An Angel,’ their Shanghai show will surely pack plenty of tracks from last year’s acclaimed disc, Endless Forms Most Beautiful.

Apr 15: The Jungle Book
The Disney animated classic gets a live-action reimagining directed by Iron Man’s Jon Favreau. Neel Sethi stars as Mowgli, a human boy raised by Indian wolves (voiced by Lupita Nyong’o and Giancarlo Esposito). When a fearsome Bengal tiger (Idris Elba) threatens his life, Mowgli leaves his jungle home and embarks on a memorable adventure with the black panther Bagheera (Ben Kingsley) and Baloo the bear (Bill Murray). Scarlett Johansson and Christopher Walken provide voices for iconic characters Kaa the python and King Louie the orangutan. The film will debut in China at the same time as America, a week after its world premiere in India.

Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart star in this action comedy, following a former mind control patient turned stoner who is pursued by a CIA agent played by Topher Grace.

Apr 15: Mifan Mama Afternoon Series
Hakkasan hosts the first in Mifan Mama’s afternoon series, presenting assorted canapés with exquisitely prepared afternoon tea. There will be a special children’s corner on-site and a silent auction with a goal of raising RMB86,400 to help the organization sponsor the education of 24 needy kids in Henan.

Apr 15: Unkle Sounds
S.T.D. presents the live show of the iconic British group originally formed by James Lavell and future DFA Records co-founder Tim Goldsworthy. The super group has worked with icons from DJ Shadow to Radiohead’s Thom Yorke, while representing the Mo Wax label admirably. This unique AV show pays tribute to Unkle’s over 20 years career with rare performances from guest artists. R3, AD08, Donn and Faded Ghost support.

Apr 15-16: Shanghai Ballet’s Hamlet
Shanghai Grand Theatre’s celebration of the 400-year anniversary of Shakespeare’s death continues with the premiere of the Shanghai Ballet’s adaptation of The Bard’s classic. Derek Deane choreographs and the show continues the Shanghai Ballet’s recent run of fresh interpretations of classics.

Apr 15-16: Zainab Johnson
Kung Fu Komedy hosts their first female international headliner. The New York native mines serious laughs from everyday drama thanks to an engaging style that took her to the semi-finals of the 2014 season of Last Comic Standing. She’s trained with the Groundlings, toured the world with Jimmy Schubert and has appeared on hit shows like BET’s Hell Date. For more, check out our interview with Zainab Johnson.

Apr 15-16: Thai Rivera
While Joe Machi wasn’t able to get a visa on time, Shanghai Comedy Club has capably rebounded by bringing in the edgy fixture of LA’s comedy scene. Rivera has performed at such comic institutions as the Laugh Factory and was featured in Comedy Central’s Live at Gotham.

Apr 15-17: F1 Chinese Grand Prix
China’s premiere racing event returns as the F1 Chinese Grand Prix once again takes over the Shanghai Audi International Circuit. Expect the best racers in the world to converge on the city that was once again won by Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton. Practice day on Friday, qualifying on Saturday and the big race on Sunday. Family packages available for one adult and one child (RMB1,400-2,400) or one adult and two children (RMB1,620-2,620). And, as always, the ever glam and celebrity-filled F1 after parties take place at Bar Rouge, including a Saturday night performance by French hip hop star Cut Killer.

April 16: Keppel Sheshan Charity Run
This charity run supported by Keppel Land China takes place in the picturesque outskirts of Sheshan. There are two routes – a 3km parenting run and a 10km cross-country race that will take runners across mountains and forests. All proceeds will go to Shanghai Charity Foundation to assist sick kids.

Designer Dianela Cuellar, the Library Project and Urban Soup Kitchen launches their Good Project with this fair designed to raise funds to build libraries in needy areas of rural China. There will be plenty of crafts and kids activities, plus the event will double as the seventh anniversary celebrations of Urban Soup Kitchen.

Apr 16: Historic Shanghai Walking Tours
Historic Shanghai continues to bring to life Tess Johnston’s recently released final edition of her revered Shanghai Walking Tour books. Contributors to The Where’s Where of the Who’s Who of Old Shanghai will bring to life the neighborhoods they covered including Spencer Dodington’s Hongkou: Perpetually on the Fringe walk on Apr 16.

Apr 16: Egberto Gismonti
The Shanghai Symphony Orchestra Hall’s tribute to trendsetting German label ECM kicks off with a concert by the revered Brazilian composer, guitarist and pianist. Since his classic 1977 album with percussionist Naná Vasconcelos, Dança Das Cabeças, Gismonti has been one of ECM’s most acclaimed artists, famously recording a pair of landmark albums with Ornette Coleman’s long-time bassist Charlie Haden and Norwegian saxophonist Jan Garbarek.

Apr 16: Queen Sea Big Shark
The beloved Beijing quartet has evolved from sardonic surf-rockers to sophisticated dance rockers to psychedelic folkies capable of stirring anthems like ‘Bling Bling Bling.’ Their much anticipated third album has finally come out on Modern Sky and their accompanying national tour stops off for what promises to be a packed house at MAO’s. The acclaimed Vancouver group headlines the latest in the Split Works and Shanghai Symphony Orchestra Contemporale concerts. Led by Dan Bejar, who is also a member of The New Pornographers, Destroyer has grown from a solo project into a full-fledged group receiving its greatest praise for their recent chamber pop-inspired discs like last year’s Poison Season. The Monpa singer is both revered in indie-folk circles and a former runner-up on Chinese Idol. With a unique backstory and ethereal sound, the songstress celebrates the upcoming release of her debut album, The Secret Land of the Lotus, with a four city national tour that stops off at MAO Livehouse.
